Heavy Equipment Technician

Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for inspecting, servicing, and repairing any large machinery. This large machinery comes from many different industries, including construction, farming, and scrap yards. This role is essential for keeping large equipment operational and ensuring that projects run smoothly and safely.

Responsibilities

  • Routine Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform all routine maintenance and preventative tasks on equipment for all divisions, diagnose problems, and carry out necessary repairs to keep equipment in good working condition and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
  • Service Requests: Investigate service requests for repairs and maintenance, determine the nature of the problem, and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Parts and Supplies: Source and order required parts, supplies, and services.
  • Documentation: Accurately document repairs and service work on each vehicle and update daily maintenance logs.
  • Tool Operation: Operate all tools necessary to properly repair equipment.
  • Safety: Safely operate forklifts, man-lifts, and equipment, adhering to safety standards.
  • Work Environment: Assist in maintaining a clean work environment and help in the scrapyard as needed.
  • Inspection, Diagnosis, and Maintenance: Inspect heavy equipment to identify issues, determine necessary repairs, and ensure all equipment is in safe working condition. Use diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
  • Repairs and Overhauls: Inspect, repair, and replace defective or worn parts, such as bearings, pistons, and gears. Overhaul and test major components, such as engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems. Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment and components.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Documentation: Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Operate and maintain various tools and equipment used in repairs, such as welders, hoists, and hand tools.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics (preferred but not required).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical systems and components.
  • Problem-solving skills to diagnose and fix complex issues.
  • Attention to detail to ensure all repairs and maintenance tasks are performed accurately.
  • Good communication skills to explain technical issues and repairs to non-technical personnel.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Post-secondary education in heavy equipment technology or a related field (preferred but not required).
  • ASE certification (beneficial but not required).
  • Manufacturer-specific training for specific machinery (beneficial but not required).

Work Environment:

  • Physical Demands: The job often requires lifting heavy parts, working in various positions, and handling greasy and dirty equipment.
