Here are some preventative tips to avoid TMR mixer wagon breakdowns in the cold winters.

1. The axles seem to get more crystallized or brittle in the cold winters.  Drive slower over frozen, rough ground to minimize stress on the axles.
2. Store the mixer wagon in a shed if possible.
3. Keep knives in good condition on the augers by rotating or replacing them as needed.  This helps break up frozen silage chunks instead of getting them wedged in the augers and causing problems.
4. The oil gets stiff in subzero weather.  Let the mixer run 5 to 10 minutes before loading it to warm the oil for better lubrication when the temperature is below zero.
5. On reel mixers, check the reel bar hold-down bolts for wear.  The bolts can pop out or break if the bars or the bolts are worn.  Frozen silage chunks increase the stress on the bolts.

The most common is C55 (riveted) and C55PC (pin and cotter) cast chain link.
The C55PC is great because it can be made to any length without a connector link.

Replacing auger flighting on reel and auger mixers:

• The auger tube should be at least ¼ thick on the smaller wagons with 3/8 flights.
• On the bigger wagons 5/16 or 3/8 thick tube with ½ flight.
• If using 5/8 or ¾ flight use a new tube 7/16 or ½ thick.
• Otherwise you have an auger that is cracked in half with new flighting on it. It does happen!!
• The money you save cutting the old flight off can be then put towards the new tube.

Auger flighting on vertical mixers:

• Vertical mixers usually need the complete augers because of how they are welded on.
• It is possible to reflight if it is bent or something as a partial auger.
• In time we will address verticals – we are looking at some options to redo those augers.
